A Photographer's Week Around Passu

I go north most autumns specifically for the light, and this trip was built entirely around being in the right place at sunrise and sunset rather than covering distance. Passu was the anchor for most of the week because the Cones are one of the few formations I know that genuinely look different every hour of the day. Mornings started before 5am, which is the unglamorous part nobody photographs. I'd walk out from the guesthouse while it was still dark and wait, sometimes for a clear sky that didn't arrive. Autumn gave me colder, sharper air than a summer trip would have, and correspondingly better clarity on the two mornings it worked. The short walk up toward the glacier was the one thing I did purely for the walk rather than the photos, though I'm glad I brought a camera anyway — the ice at the snout has a texture up close that's easy to lose in a wide shot from the road. It's not a long or difficult route, but it gets you close enough to actually see the glacier rather than just acknowledge it from a distance. Attabad on the way back through was almost incidental, tacked onto the return drive, but the water does something different in late afternoon light than it does at midday when everyone else photographs it — worth the detour if your schedule allows a stop that isn't strictly on the way. I came home with several thousand frames and, if I'm honest, about a dozen I'm actually happy with. That ratio feels about right for this kind of trip.
