Kalam and Mahodand Lake With My Parents
I write these reports mostly so my parents remember the trips later, since neither of them keeps a diary and I'm the one who ends up telling the stories afterward. This one was a short trip to Kalam and up to Mahodand, chosen specifically because it's manageable for my father, who has knee problems and can't do a long trek anymore.
Kalam itself was a comfortable two nights — enough time to settle in without feeling rushed, and close enough to the river that my mother spent most of one afternoon just sitting near it reading. The road up to Mahodand was the part I was least sure about beforehand, since it's rougher than the roads lower down, but the jeep ride itself became part of the trip rather than an obstacle to it.
The lake earns its reputation. We didn't attempt any real walking beyond the flat path along the near shore — enough for my father to manage comfortably, and enough for all three of us to just sit and look at the water for a long stretch of the afternoon. My mother said, more than once, that it was the calmest she'd felt in months, which for a family trip is really the entire point.
We kept the whole thing short and easy on purpose. Not every trip needs to be a hike, and this was a good reminder that a place can be worth visiting even if all you do there is sit beside it.
