About Attabad Lake

The lake is a reminder that this landscape is still actively moving — the 2010 landslide that created it also displaced the highway, which now runs partly through tunnels bored around the lake's edge. The water's colour shifts with season and sediment, from deep teal to a paler jade, and boat operators run short crossings between the shoreline settlements.

A long, narrow reservoir lake filling the valley floor between steep, largely bare rock slopes.

A recent addition to the valley's geography — local communities were resettled after the 2010 landslide, and the lake now anchors part of the area's tourism economy.

On-the-water crossing

Boat rides give a different vantage point on the surrounding mountains than the roadside view.

Highway meets lake

The road tunnels cut around the lakeshore make for a distinctive engineering-meets-landscape shot.
