About Noor Mahal
Noor Mahal is the most photographed building in Bahawalpur and the clearest evidence of what the state's rulers wanted to project in the late nineteenth century: an Italianate palace with domes, colonnades and balustrades, built by a princely house on the edge of a desert. The interiors carry period furnishings, and the building has been used by the army for some of its recent history, which is why access arrangements have changed more than once and are not something this guide can state with confidence. It sits in formal grounds that are lit in the evening, and most visitors pair it with the other Nawabi buildings in the city.
