About Ratti Gali Lake Trek

Ratti Gali is a glacial lake set in a high bowl above the Neelum Valley, fed by snowmelt and ringed by peaks that hold snow through the summer. Most visitors take a jeep from Dowarian to a base camp and walk the final section, which climbs steadily through meadow and rock. The lake is bright turquoise in strong light and often carries floating ice at its edges even in July. It is one of the most photographed places in Azad Kashmir, and busy in season.

Alpine meadow and boulder slope beneath snow-holding ridges, around a turquoise glacial lake.

Walkers with moderate fitness willing to handle a rough jeep ride and a steady climb.

Key highlights

  • A turquoise glacial lake at around 3,700 m
  • Alpine meadows on the approach from base camp
  • Floating ice at the lake edge well into summer
  • Accessible as a long day from Dowarian

Why walk this one

The colour of the water against the surrounding rock is genuinely unusual, and the walk in from base camp is short enough to suit people who would not attempt a multi-day route.

How demanding is this trek?

Kohistan Journey's own editorial banding — not an official or standardised mountaineering grade.

ModerateNeeds verification

The walking itself is straightforward, but it happens above 3,000 m and the approach involves a rough jeep journey that is tiring in its own right.

What makes it this hard

  • Around 10 km return with roughly 600 m of ascent from base camp
  • Lake sits near 3,700 m
  • Stream crossings on the approach
  • Rough jeep track from Dowarian before the walking starts

The published numbers for this route alone would suggest Challenging. The grade above reflects an editorial judgement as well — treat both as indicative and seek local advice.

Difficulty here describes the route in good conditions. Snow, high water, and weather can make any trek on this site significantly harder than its grade suggests, and none of those are tracked on this page.

We will publish a route line only once we have a GPX track we can stand behind. An approximate line drawn from memory would be worse than none on a route this remote.

Planning notes

General planning guidance for this route. None of it describes current conditions.

Altitude and acclimatisation

The lake sits at around 3,700 m and many people arrive from much lower the same morning. Move slowly and stop if you feel unwell.

Navigation

The route from base camp is well used in season and generally straightforward to follow.

Water

Streams cross the route. Treat everything you collect.

Camping

Camping happens near base camp rather than at the lake. Carry all waste back down.

Hazards to plan for

General hazards inherent to this kind of route. This is preparation guidance, not a live conditions report or a substitute for local advice.

Altitude sickness

AltitudeSerious severityNeeds verification

Above roughly 2,500 m, altitude sickness becomes a genuine possibility regardless of fitness. Headache, nausea, poor sleep, and breathlessness are common early signs, and they can progress to conditions that are life-threatening.

Preparing for it: Ascend gradually, build in rest days, drink plenty of water, and descend if symptoms worsen. This is general awareness — talk to a doctor about your own situation.

Rapid weather changes

WeatherHigh severityNeeds verification

Mountain weather in northern Pakistan can turn within an hour. Clear mornings routinely become snow, rain, or high wind by afternoon, especially at altitude.

Preparing for it: Start early, carry full weather protection regardless of the forecast, and be willing to turn back. This site does not publish live weather.

River and stream crossings

River crossingsHigh severityNeeds verification

Glacier-fed streams rise through the day as snowmelt increases, so a crossing that is ankle-deep in the morning can be dangerous by afternoon.

Preparing for it: Cross early in the day where possible, unclip your pack's waist belt, and turn back rather than forcing a crossing. Water levels are not tracked on this site.

Cold and night temperatures

Cold exposureHigh severityNeeds verification

Night temperatures at camp can fall well below freezing even in mid-summer, and wind chill on exposed sections makes it feel considerably colder.

Preparing for it: Carry more insulation than a summer date suggests, and keep a dry set of clothing for camp.

Trekking responsibly

These routes pass through places people live and work. How visitors behave has a direct effect on both.

  • Carry every piece of rubbish back out, including food waste, wrappers, and tissue.
  • Stay on the established path — braided trails across alpine meadow take years to heal.
  • Ask before photographing people, homes, or livestock.
  • Camp well away from streams and lakes, and leave no trace of your pitch.
  • Use a stove rather than firewood; juniper and birch here regrow very slowly.
  • Pay porters and guides fairly, and check the loads they are being asked to carry.

Frequently asked questions

Can I drive all the way to the lake?

No. The jeep track ends at base camp and the final section is walked or ridden on horseback.

How busy does it get?

It is one of the best-known lakes in Azad Kashmir and sees significant summer visitor numbers. Starting early makes a real difference.

This page does not report current trail conditions, snow cover, river levels, weather, or route closures. None of those are tracked here, and any of them can make a route impassable or dangerous.

This route reaches above 3,000 m. Altitude affects people differently and can become serious quickly. This is general awareness, not medical advice — speak to a doctor about your own situation.

We do not publish permit requirements, guide certifications, porter rates, rescue availability, or emergency numbers, because we cannot keep them accurate. Confirm all of these with local authorities and operators before you travel.

For remote and high-altitude routes, a local guide is not just a convenience — they know the ground, the weather patterns, and the people, in ways no website can replace.
