About Saidu Sharif

Swat was a princely state in its own right until it was merged into Pakistan in 1969, and Saidu Sharif was its capital — which is why the administrative buildings, the shrine of the Akhund of Swat and the Swat Museum are all concentrated here rather than in the larger city next door. The museum holds much of the Gandharan material excavated from the valley, and the Saidu Sharif stupa sits a short way out of town. For anyone interested in why Swat matters archaeologically, this is the densest half-day in the valley.
