About Shandur Pass
Shandur is unusual among high passes in being flat and open rather than a narrow defile — a wide plateau of grass and shallow lakes where the road crosses between two regions. That flatness is why the polo ground is there, and the summer tournament between Chitral and Gilgit sides is the one time of year the pass is crowded. The rest of the season it is empty, and outside the short summer window it is under snow and closed. It is the highest ground most travellers between Chitral and Gilgit-Baltistan will cross, and altitude should be treated seriously.
